What the Hell is Cortisol?


Allow me to be clear, I am NOT a medical doctor, the only information I share are what I can provide links to. Most links I’ll share are to US government sources and their domain names will always end in .gov or .mil. I make no claims, I only provide sources.


 Cortisol is Disease

I can show numerous published research articles on PubMed to verify how deadly cortisol is. I’ll place a few links, especially pertaining to Multiple Sclerosis and Devic’s disease, the two major illnesses that I have. I have spent many hours in serious pain and have sought cures for these diseases. In all the articles I would read and every doctor I spoke to, the answer was the same:

We don’t know what causes Multiple Sclerosis.

That answer was NOT good enough for me. I wanted out of pain, like all of us do. I was also not a fan of the constant push of opiates, by my physicians, I have heard and seen too many horror stories. I was looking for answers and not finding any. It wasn’t until Meki introduced me to a video by Dr. Terry Wahls called “Minding your Mitochondria” that she presented to TEDtalks.

Cortisol and Depression?

One of the earliest articles I cam across from 2011 A)https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21621332 was about cortisol production and the effects of depression and MS. It was a beginning. I was suffering from depression, but I think more because I had been completely debilitated. I was still trying Avonex and Copaxone, with cortisone and ibuprofen like candy. Cortisol Awakening

What an interesting term: ‘Cortisol Awakening’. Cortisol is produced all day, all the time. Some things cause a reaction. Should you look up any disease on PubMed along with the word ‘cortisol’ (ie. cortisol + multiple sclerosis) you will see study after study showing the link of higher levels. This made me then change my research focus. Well, what the hell causes the production of cortisol in the first place?

Testing for Cortisol

When I would be in the hospital with a flare-up, I began asking for my levels to be tested. Sure enough, they were extremely high! These events would always happen three (3) days after a serious stressful situation in my life (ie. father robbed and murdered, separation & divorce (now understanding the disease, that being the major unknown factor), robbery and loss of my business (while out of town teaching two seminars) etc…

Get tested. Never believe a word I say, find your own proof! It is your body and your life. No person will ever have a more vested interest in your health than you. I can only show what I have discovered, in small scale, that has worked for me.

Okay, It’s Cortisol. Now What?

Well, what causes cortisol production? I was getting headaches, never slept, got up to 500 lbs, had zero sex drive for almost three (3) years, always had acid reflux and I had to stop what was causing all that. What was causing it? Guilt, stress, vitamin and mineral deficiencies. I worked in Silicon Valley, for many years. I also owned businesses in the High Desert and spent most my times indoors. I ate crappily! Fast foods, microwave burritos, handfuls of cheese (all washed down with gallons of soda (pop for my Southerners out there) were my staples… daily. I was also living a life of dishonesty; not facing childhood issues, not wanting to grow up, Peter Pan Syndrome, if you will. As adults, we cause our own disease. It’s usually our fault.

I began looking for way to reduce the production of this ravaging disease! I had read articles (find them yourself, use a search engine) where MS happens less often with people that live in forests. Specifically pine forests. Time to learn a new word:

Cannabis and Cortisol

Cortisol is the stress hormone. Stress, Stress, Stress! Growing up, I was always against cannabis usage, had even ended friendships over it. Like many, I was brainwashed by heavy prohibition propaganda. One thing I have noticed over the years, stoners aren’t stressed… unless police are around.
